My first oil painting was an experience; It mixes differently, it interacts with the canvas and other mediums differently, and it certainly dries differently. I expected to make the same paintings I've been making with a new medium and I learned that this new medium is going to create a new me instead. I'm going to expand into oil painting in hopes to create things that are long lasting in a different way - something that connects me with the masters. This foray into doing things the way some of the artists I admire the most did them is a new source of inspiration for me in these cold winter months when it is hard to find in the Midwest chill. I love how this piece turned out, and I'm excited to see where the next ones end up, because I still have so much to play with and explore within the medium. I know they will be full of the most beautiful layers, one of my favorite things in a painting.
Creating this was a lesson in patience and trusting the process; oil painting is helping me see the beauty of truly subtle colors and how to create pieces with movement and interest when my materials are not as bright and vibrant originally. I recorded this video so that you can see the intricacies in this new style and hope you can see the beauty in the waiting for it to build, for it to dry, and for me to learn.
